Sharma is survived by his wife and a son. He was undergoing treatment for various ailments at a private hospital, sources said.

One of the most outstanding historians of ancient India, RS Sharma's celebrated work was Indian Feudalism. He served as chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research.

CM Nitish Kumar has expressed grief at his demise and said that Sharma will be remembered for his academic achievement. Kumar also announced a state funeral for the departed historian.
