Three youths were brutally beaten up by nearly 400 villagers in Bihar for snatching away a motorcycle. But police on Tuesday denied reports that the mob had gouged out their eyes.

A case has been registered against the villagers for taking the law into their own hands, police sources said. The incident took place at Vardaha village in Nawada district on Monday.

Superintendent of police Vinod Kumar (Nawada district) said it was wrongly reported that the eyes of the three motorcycle-snatchers were pierced with a pointed iron tool.

"The youths were severely beaten up by people after they were caught and the eye of one got damaged," Kumar told IANS.

The three have been admitted to a government-run hospital in Nawada.

Police officials said the three youths in the age of 18-20 tried to snatch a motorcycle from a man at gunpoint. "The victim used his mobile phone to inform a relative, whose village was a little distance ahead, to catch them," a policeman said.

Kumar said he had ordered a probe into the incident.
