Devotees arrive to take a holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of the rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, in Prayagraj. The festival has different names in different states, even though it is celebrated on the same day. It is referred to as Pedda Panduga in Andhra Pradesh, Makar Sankranti in Karnataka, Magh Bihu in Assam, Magha Mela in parts of central and north India and Pongal in Tamil Nadu. (PTI)

On Monday, RJD vice-president Tejashwi Yadav offered full support to the SP-BSP alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the general elections, saying the alliance was the best thing that could have happened and will go down the history as big step in Indian politics. “We have no doubt that the BJP will be wiped out of UP and Bihar. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the CBI on former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar’s appeal against his conviction in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. Kumar had approached the Supreme Court on December 22 challenging the life imprisonment after the Delhi High Court rejected his plea seeking an extension till January 30 to surrender. (PTI)

Firefighters douse a fire that broke after a cylinder exploded in a tent at the Digambar Ani Akhara at the Kumbh Mela site, in Prayagraj. According to reports, the fire started in one of the tents at Digambar Akhara and quickly spread. Police and fire fighters are at the spot to carrying out rescue operations. (PTI)
