Photos: Maratha groups call off bandh in Mumbai and Thane, following violence

Maratha leaders called off their Mumbai shutdown on Wednesday afternoon and asked agitators in other parts of the state to follow suit. The move to call off the agitation was taken after several incidents of violence in Mumbai as well as surrounding areas, including the burning of a BEST bus, buses and trains being halted, rail blockades in Jogeshwari and Kalyan, stoppage of traffic at the Mulund Check Naka, stone pelting at Ghansoli and an agitation against mediapersons in Kalamboli that forced the police to fire in the air and launch a lathi-charge.

The intensity of the bandh was more severe in Navi Mumbai as compared to Mumbai and Thane, according to bandh organisers. Shops were closed in Navi Mumbai and auto-rickshaws were off the roads, a day after large-scale violence marred a statewide protest by Maratha outfits demanding quota in jobs and education.
