A 22-year-old BPO (business process outsourcing) employee lost his life after he was assaulted with sharp weapons by three assailants who were on a motorcycle. The episode, which occurred at Deluxe Chowk, Pimpri at 2pm on Friday, has shocked the entire Pimpri neighbourhood.
The three assailants, also in their early to mid-20s, were arrested by the police on Saturday. The accused were identified as Dharmesh Shamkant Patil (25), a resident of Milindnagar; Yeshwant alias Anil Laxman Gaikwad (20) and Swapnil Sanjay Kamble (25), a resident of Adharshnagar.
“It is an unfortunate incident of road rage where the accused attacked the victim which later led to his death. Strong action has been taken and the accused have been arrested,” said Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissioner RK Padmanabhan.
According to first information report (FIR) filed by the Pimpri police, the victim Manjeet Motilal Prasad (22), an employee of WNS, a BPO firm, was returning home in the Tempo Traveller of the company when the motorcyclists asked the driver to stop the vehicle.
Manjeet was allegedly slapped by one of the motorcyclists when he asked the reason for stopping the vehicle. The matter soon escalated as Manjeet got down from the vehicle and the three youths took out sharp weapons and assaulted him, police said.
“They attacked him and left him grievously injured. He died late on Friday night. The accused have been arrested and investigation is on in the case,” said police inspector (crime) Rangnath Unde of the Pimpri police station.
Manjeet was rushed to the Thergaon Hospital on Friday.
Police said the three arrested, who were residents of a neighbouring slum, were habitual offenders and were in an inebriated condition.
