The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has failed to call for fresh tenders for the house-to-house garbage collection. In April, the civic body had appointed two agencies AJ Enviro ( ₹1,780/tonne of garbage) and BVG India (₹1,740/tonne of garbage) to collect the trash from the city and to transport it to Moshi garbage dumping depot for the period of 8 years.
However, PCMC commissioner had cancelled the tendering process after allegations of cartel by opposition parties. It has been five months and PCMC had failed to float fresh tenders which according to the residents will create garbage problems in the city. Earlier, irregularities in allocation of tenders had prompted opposition parties to accuse ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and administration of corruption.
Prashant Shitole, former NCP corporator, alleged that there is corruption in the deal. He had also approached the high court seeking cancellation of the contract. He also approached the prime minister’s and the chief minister’s office and lodged a complaint. Datta Sane, opposition leader, National Congress Party said that the delay in giving contract will create serious garbage issues.
“This will create serious garbage related problems in PCMC. The civic body has failed to finalise the tender even after five months. It has also been sanctioned by the sanding committee. ” Manoj Lonkar, health executive officer, health department, PCMC said,“We are working on finalising request for proposal (RFP) of new tender. After completion of RFP, the proposal will be again submitted to the standing committee for proposal. The entire procedure will take a month’s time. We can float the tender only after that. Till then, we have made arrangements to collect and transport the garbage.” There is no need to worry about garbage problem in city,Lonkar added.
The officials of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation informed that, vehicles based on latest technology would be employed for lifting the garbage. They also said that new contractors would be appointed soon. Since there has already been a delay of five months, officials in the know-how say that any further delay will be avoided for the benefit of the residents of PCMC.
