The Pune police arrested a man for breaking into a house and stealing ₹10 lakh worth of jewellery. The police arrested the man within two hours of the case being registered, following which he was found to be involved in 26 other robberies as well.
The man was identified as Himmat Peter D Rebello, a resident of Altius Drome Society in Vadeshwarnagar of Kharadi, Pune. All the 26 cases against him were registered at Yerawada police station, between 2012 and 2015.
Rebello was arrested in a case filed at Chanagannagar police station under Sections 454 (trespassing or house breaking), 457 (trespassing or house breaking at night), 380 (theft in house) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Rebello was arrested two hours after the case was registered against him at Chandannagar police station. The case is being investigated by police sub-inspector (PSI) Shridhar Bhosale of Chandannagar police station.
Besides the 26 cases against him, Chandannagar police also said that he had robbed two other places in the area.
"He was out on bail when most of the Yerawada robbery incidents occurred. He had also robbed houses from the society he was living in earlier (Brahma Society). The two other robberies are also from the society where he currently lives," said PSI Bhosale. "He moved into his current house around two years ago. He lives with his wife and two daughters. While the elder one is in Class 10, the younger one must be in Class five or six," he added.

{{/usCountry}}Rebello and his family lives in the house on rent. The police are investigating whether the landlord had the requisite paperwork as Rebello is not in a position to clear the police verification process.
The complaint in the case was filed by Tanay Govind Agarwal, 30, also a resident of Altius Drome society in Kharadi. Agarwal lives two floors above Rebello.
Between 2pm on Sunday and 10pm on Tuesday, gold, diamond, foreign currency, speakers and headphones from Agarwal's house were stolen. The stolen goods were collectively found to be worth ₹10,67,950, according to the police. After having left his home on Sunday afternoon, when Agarwal returned home on Tuesday night, he found the lock of the main door broken and his family's belongings stolen.
The police have recovered ₹10,16,000 worth of stolen goods belonging to Agarwal and other jewellery worth ₹40,000 from Rebello's possession. He told police that he sold goods worth ₹50,000 stolen from Agarwal's house.
