PUNE A 21-year-old youth from Pune, Sachin Lallan Upadhyay, fell into deep gorge at Lion’s point, Lonavla while taking a selfie on Sunday. Fortunately, he was rescued by Lonavla’s Shivdurga trekking team and admitted to a hospital.

Sachin and his friends had gone to Lonavla on Sunday. At Lion’s point, Sachin attempted to click a selfie and slipped. Before his friends could grab him, he fell into the gorge. Luckily, he hit a tree branch 60ft below and did not fall further.

His friends and locals immediately contacted the local police, and at around 2.30 pm team members of Shivdurga Mitra arrived at the spot.

“It took an hour to rescue him from the spot and we noticed that he had several head and back injuries. He wasn’t unconscious but it was clear that he had been hurt badly. He has been admitted to Pioneer Hospital in Talegaon,” said Sunil Gaikwad of Shivdurga Mitra.

Pravin Deshmukh, Ajay Shelar, Vaibhav Shelar, Abhijeet Borkar and Sameer Joshi were part of the Shivdurga rescue team.

The popular Lion's Point of Lonavla has witnessed similar incidents in the past few years. Two years back, a 25-year-old man Agnel Cyril Peris, from Kalina in Mumbai, had lost his life while taking a selfie at the same place, while Aditya Kadam, a 20-year-old student from Paud Road, was found dead in a 450-foot-deep valley at Lion's Point in August, 2017. Another Pune youth Piyush Sanjeev Rastogi (21) was also found dead in the area. Rural police recovered his body from the 500-foot gorge with the help from Shivdurga Mitra organisation in April 2017.
