Market Watch: Two-day off brings huge veggie supply to Pune

Prices of vegetables went down by almost 10 to 15 per cent as against the prices last week with heavy supply.

The Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Pune, witnessed a huge supply of vegetables from neighbouring districts on Sunday, after being shut for two days owing to the state bandh on Thursday and the weekly off on Saturday.

On Sunday, APMC, Pune, received 225 trucks of vegetables that resulted in the drop in prices of ladies’ finger, cluster beans, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, brinjal and peas. 

Vilas Bhujbal, president of Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard Traders' and Agents' Association, said, “Maharashtra bandh on Thursday and weekly off on Saturday has affected the arrival of vegetables in APMC. As a result,on Sunday, we witnessed a record breaking inflow.”

Also, most of the farmers have harvested their green vegetables which is also one of the reasons for the increased supply, Bhujbal added.

On Sunday, ladies’ finger was sold at Rs 150-250 per 10 kilogrammes, as compared to Rs 200-250 for 10 kgs last week. Cluster bean was sold at Rs 300-400 for 10 kgs against Rs 350-420 last week.

The price of ridge gourd also decreased and was sold at Rs 150-200 for 10 kgs against Rs 200-250 for 10 kgs earlier.

As many as 5,000 bags of tomatoes and 300 bags of groundnuts arrived at APMC, Pune, on Sunday. A total of 300 bags of carrots arrived from the neighbouring districts of Pune.The prices of potatoes and onions are stable at Rs 130-180 per 10 kilogrammes and Rs 100-130 for 10 kilogrammes, respectively.
