The Savitribai Phule Pune University’s (SPPU) senate elections will be interesting, given that relatives of the chief minister and former deputy chief minister are in the fray. Three years after Devendra Fadnavis became chief minister of Maharashtra, his cousin, Prasenjit Fadnavis, has now decided to enter politics via the senate elections.
Besides, Prasenjit, Nationalist Congress Party leader and former deputy chief minister, Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, has also filed her nominations for the SPPU senate elections. Pawar filed her papers from management women’s category. Prasenjit Fadnavis, on Thursday, filed nomination papers for the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) senate elections, scheduled for November 19.
Prasenjit, a trustee of the Saraswati Vidya Mandit, has filed nomination papers in the graduate category.
“I have been active with students issues for more than two decades. As an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), I was involved in many agitations,” Prasenjit told Hindustan times.
When asked if the CM’s clout would help him win the elections, Prasenjit said he had originally decided to contest senate elections in 2011, though things did not work out at the time.
“I cannot deny the fact that Devendra Fadnavis is my cousin, but I have been active with students issues since 1988.” A law graduate, Prasenjit was brought up in Pune and has studied at Garware college. He is representing the Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch, formed by ABVP.
The SPPU senate elections will see a major push by the Ekata Vikas Manch and Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch. The Vidyapeeth Vikas Manch has seven contestants in the fray from the graduate category.
They include Fadnavis, Girish Bhavalkar, Bageshri Manthankar, Advt Varsha Dhahale and Dr Sunil Bhadange. Over 81,000 voters have registered for the SPPU senate election. The University is holding elections after seven years under new University Act, 2016. The Senate comprises representatives from graduate students, principals and affiliated colleges. The Senate has a responsibility to give suggestions to the university on areas like academics, research and development..
