Ranka Jewellers’ staffer held for theft

A 21-year-old employee of Ranka Jewellers has been arrested by the Pune police for allegedly conspiring to steal ornaments worth ₹1.47 crore of the company by cooking up a fake story of robbery. The accused has been identified as Ajay Hogade, a resident of Sion-Koliwada in Mumbai. Hogade was employed at the Kalbadevi branch of Ranka Jewellers in Mumbai and has been working there for the last three months.

On July 26, Hogade, who used to work as an office boy, was sent to Pune to deliver the gold and diamond ornaments worth ₹ 1.47 crore to the main branch of Ranka Jewellers in Pune. He alighted at platform number 6 of Pune railway station. He alleged that he was attacked with knives by four people, who took away the sack of ornaments.
He later approached the Bund Garden police station and registered a complaint of robbery. However, during the investigation, it was discovered that he had cooked up the story to steal the money, said Pankaj Dahane, DCP (deputy commissioner of police), crime, Pune police.
Dahane said, “While investigating the case, we realised that the scars of attack on the stomach and back of Hogade seemed self-inflicted. On probing deeper, we came to know that the financial condition of his family was not good and his family was reeling under a debt of ₹12 lakh. He later admitted his guilt."
Hogade conspired with his brother Sharad, father Maruti and friend Annu Kumar. After getting down at Pune, he handed over the sack to his brother and friend who then took it Mumbai and delivered it to his father.The police have arrested all of them on Sunday and have booked them for robbery and giving false information.
