Reporter among two held for chain snatching in Pune
Two men were arrested by the Wakad police on five counts of chain snatching. One of the suspects is apparently a reporter working for a private local news organisation in Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation (PCMC).
The arrested were identified as Naseem Sadiq Usmani, 32, and Mohammad Sharafat Hussain Ali, 24. Usmani, who is supposedly associated with many social organisations, had in his possession an identity card of a news organisation called Shabnam News, according to the police.
The police have recovered 82 gram gold worth ₹2,45,000 from the two. Usmani is a resident of PCMC area while Ali hails from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh. Ali has cases of robbery registered against him in Delhi. “Usmani used to call Ali (to PCMC) and they used to target pedestrian women, generally in their fifties, and snatched their chains or mangalsutra," said Ganesh Shinde, deputy commissioner of police.
The police have also recovered a grey Honda Activa moped, registered in the name of Usmani, which was used during the thefts. Their arrest brought five cases of chain snatching to light. Of the five, three were registered at Wakad police station and two at Sangvi police station.
