PUNE In the light of the bandh called by Maratha organisations over demands for reservations for the community, educational institutions in the city and its suburbs remained closed on Thursday.

Schools and colleges are following an advisory issued by Naval Kishore Ram, district collector of Pune. Some schools, considering the sensitive circumstances involved with the Maratha agitation and that the community observes August 9 as ‘Kranti Din’, had notified parents of a shutdown on Tuesday itself.

Deepak Mali, education officer (secondary and technical) at the Pune municipal corporation (PMC), said,“In the wake of the bandh called by the Maratha outfits, the education department, to ensure safety of students, has called for a closure of all the city schools, both public and private, and across mediums. During the violence in the Chakan area (one week ago), several buses that were vandalised included two school buses. We don’t want any such situation to emerge here and so the shutdown has been announced.”

TheMaratha Kranti Morcha has been spearheading the protests across the state over demands for quotas. The Maratha community constitutes around 30 per cent of Maharashtra’s population and the agitation is to push for reservations in jobs and education.

St. Mary's School, Camp, notified the parents stating,“Keeping the safety of our students in mind, the school will remain closed on August 9,2018, due to unforeseen circumstances. The examinations scheduled for August 9 will be rescheduled for August 13,2018 and Monday will be a full working day.”

Dr Kalmadi Shamarao High School, Erandwane, also had to postpone a special certificate examination scheduled on August 9, to August 13.

Nagesh Mone, New English School principaladded,“We have over 1,500 students at our school and on a working day they are our responsibility. We cannot risk their security at any cost. And, looking at the chain of events, the environment around might be a little sensitive, and so we had to call for the closure.”

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) also issued a notice to close-down all colleges affiliated to it.
