Teen held for assault of 8-year-old in temple in Pune

An 18-year-old boy was arrested and remanded to police custody in a case of sexual assault of an eight-year-old girl by Pimpri police.
The teen, identified as Rahul Bhandekar, is a resident of Kharalwadi in Pimrpi where the incident happened. The crime was committed inside a temple in Pimpri, according to the police. The incident happened while the Kathua sexual assault case was causing ripples of unrest in various parts of the country.
The girl was playing in front of a temple, known as Bhagwat Geeta temple in Pimpri, when the teenager whisked her inside the temple and sexually assaulted her, according to the complaint.
“His family has said that he is undergoing medical treatment for a mild case of mental retardation. They said he is on daily medication, but we do not have any proof to support it. We are conducting an investigation with added precaution,” said Gajanan Kadale, assistant police inspector of Sant Tukaramnagar outpost under Pimpri police jurisdiction. API Kadale, who is investigating the case, added, “We have his police custody till Monday (June 18). Further investigation is on.”
While the victim’s mother works as a domestic help, her father is a security guard at a private security agency in the city. The crime occurred at around noon, on Saturday, after which the girl narrated the incident to her mother, who then approached the local police. Bhandekar was arrested on Sunday.
A case under Section 376 (sexual assault) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 3 and 4 of the Protection of Children against Sexual Offence (POCSO) Act was registered against Bhandekar at Pimpri police station.
