Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital’s new institute in Pune to address doctor shortage issue
Institute to be inaugurated on June 3; state ministers are expected to attend the event
The Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital (YCMH) run by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation will soon be inaugurating its new postgraduate institute which will help in retaining doctors at the hospital. The institute is slated to be inaugurated on June 3.
Dr Rajendra Wable, dean of the institute at YCMH, said, “State ministers are expected to attend the inauguration planned for June 3. The official opening of the institute will however depend on the dignitaries’ time and availability.”
One of the important benefits of the new institute to the hospital will be that doctors will be available 24x7 and their shortage at the hospital if any too will be overcome, he said.
Talking about the institute offering specialised help to the hospital, Dr Wable said, “Till now at the hospital we always had junior residency where around 50 doctors (MBBS) did their residency for six months and left. This created a void, but now with the institute which will have all specialised postgraduate medical courses, not only the hospital will benefit but also the patients.
“ There will be quality care along with enough number of doctors who will be present for not only six months, but three years at a stretch. The institute will be offering three-year courses in seven subjects — obstetrics gynaecology, anaesthesia, orthopaedic, paediatric, ear, nose and throat (ENT), pathology and psychiatry,” Dr Wable said.
The dean said that the institute currently has an approval for 24 seats and have applied for 26 more seats for next year. “An inspection by the Medical Council of India (MCI) will take place in the next three months and we hope to get an approval as well so that more and more number of students can be added,” he said.
