Kahlon, who is also a lawyer, said if the authorities concerned failed to take action, he would file a writ petition against them in the Punjab and Haryana high court.

The petitioner said Nehru Park was the sole green belt in the town and was frequented by residents for recreation.

He said the park was also used by people from economically weaker sections for marriage purposes and other functions.

Stating that the park existed in the proposed masterplan of the town, Kahlon said, “It is situated in the heart of the town and provides easy access to all.”

Besides this, a Patton Tank of Pakistan, captured by the Indian Army during the Indo-Pak war of 1965, also stands tall in the park.

Meanwhile, municipal council executive officer Manjinder Singh said a car parking lot was being constructed at a cost of Rs 48 lakh in Nehru Park for the convenience of residents.

Asked about the notice, Singh said, “I have not received any notice so far.”

Several political and social organisations have also opposed the administration’s move to turn Nehru Park into a car parking lot.

They stated that the authority concerned should construct the car parking lot at another place close to the main markets.
