People of Sangrur have proved that voters can play a bigger role in democracy than what politicians feel they can, said Aam Aadmi Party candidate Bhagwant Mann after winning the Sangrur Lok Sabha seat by a huge margin.

The comedian-turned-politician, who has been raising the issues of corruption and nepotism in Indian politics, is now geared up for an innings as a parliamentarian.

To whom would you give credit for your victory?

This is the victory of the common man. I want to congratulate the people of Sangrur who have secured their own win by voting for me. I think they are the winner as they have showed the power of the common man to big politicians.

Were you expecting such a big margin?

Wherever I went during my election campaign, I saw people angry with the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), which boosted my confidence to contest for the cause of these people, especially the youth, as they were helpless and victims of political negligence. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Badal had campaigned in Sangrur for their candidates, but they failed to persuade the people to vote for them.

The AAP is a democratic party and nobody is senior or junior in our party. We will all work together for a better Punjab and a better India. I'm a soldier of the party and will honestly fulfil all the responsibilities the party will give to me.
