The seizure was made at the Mianwala Uttar border outpost in Ferozepur sector. BSF deputy inspector general (DIG), Punjab, RK Thapa said troops deployed in the area were alerted after getting an intelligence input.

At around 3.15am, the troops saw five persons cross the zero line from Pakistan side. The two in front were using a pipe to slip packets of heroin across the barbed-wire fence, said Thapa.

When BSF personnel challenged them, the intruders opened fire. Despite retaliatory fire, the smugglers managed to flee back, taking the advantage of poor visibility, said the DIG. On searching the area, 15 packets of heroin and a 10-foot-long plastic pipe were recovered.
