Though officials of the district administration, school and college students and others enthusiastically joined the week-long cleanliness drive, launched under the Swachh Bharat mission by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cleanliness and hygiene at public places still remains a challenge here.
Heaps of garbage and stray animals are a common sight in every nook and corner of the city. Not much seems to have changed after the week-long campaign to make the city garbage-free.
Heaps of garbage are still visible at places such as the Chandigarh-Bhatinda national highway-64, the local bus stand, Industrial Training Institute, vegetable market, office of the district education officer and several others.
When contacted, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Pritam Singh Johal, who had administered the oath for cleanliness to all officers of the district administration, said, "I am thankful to you that you are telling me about the garbage which is still present in the city; however, city residents should also contribute by cleaning their homes and colonies."
"I had never seen any special drive by the district administration to clean this old city; the administration should hold campaigns to educate people about the importance of cleanliness and put up dustbins at every public place," said Kamal Anand, a social worker.
