Court awards 6-month sentence to 55-year-old woman arrested with poppy husk

A local court awarded six month sentence to a 55-year-old woman named Bimla, a resident of Basti Jodhwal, Ludhiana.

A local court awarded six month sentence to a 55-year-old woman named Bimla, a resident of Basti Jodhwal, Ludhiana.

The court also imposed a fine of `3,000 and in default of payment of fine she would have to further go for imprisonment for one month.

Bimla was arrested by police on April 21, 2011, during checking by a team of anti-narcotic cell of Fatehgarh Sahib police led by assistant ub inspector Malkeet Singh near bus stand and recovered 10-kg poppy husk from her.

A case under Sections 15, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused. The court convicted her on Saturday.

In a similar case, the local court awarded six-month sentence to Arun Kumar, originally a resident of Khujri village of Bihar.

The court also imposed a fine of `2,500 and in default of payment of fine he would have to further go for imprisonment for one month.

He was arrested by a team of police led by ASI Balbir Singh during checking near Aniya Road, Amloh. The police team recovered 1.5-kg ganja from him on March 12, 2011. A case under Sections 20, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the accused.
