Doctors booked for conducting abortions, deliveries illegally

Two doctors of Jagdish Hospital in Patran have been booked for illegal practice. Dr Tarun Sharma and Dr Ram Bilas Gupta were conducting deliveries and abortions even though they did not have the licence to do so. They were booked under Section 16 of Indian Medical Council Act.

Acting on a complaint from Columbia Asia Hospital, civil surgeon Varinder Singh Mohi along with a health department team and police raided Jagdish Hospital where Dr Sharma and Dr Gupta were carrying on with their unauthorised practice.

Dr Mohi said Columbia authorities had informed the health department that Shimla Devi, a resident of Khang village near Patran, was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition after she underwent abortion in Jagdish Hospital.

Dr Mohi said during the raid, his team found instruments from the hospital. "The hospital failed to furnish a medical termination of pregnancy certificate, which is required for carrying out abortions and deliveries," he said.
