Alleging police inaction against his son-in-law, who he got booked for dowry harassment three years ago, a local man has accused his son-in-law's family, who are well-connected, of threatening him.
In his complaint submitted to the inspector general of police at Jalandhar, Ram Parkash Sehgal alleged that his daughter Surekha had married Hambowal village resident Parveen Kumar in December, 2000, but the marriage failed.
“Her in-laws started torturing my daughter a few months after the wedding for not bringing more dowry. We complained to the police several times, but they took no action as Parveen's elder son Jai Dev Bittu has high political affiliations. After a long battle with the system, I managed to get a case registered against Parveen on August 27 this year,” Sehgal told HT.
“For the past eight years, my daughter has been living at my house with her two children, while Parveen has been living with a woman he has an extra-marital relationship with. After the case was registered, Jai Dev hid his younger brother, and is now threatening my daughter regularly to force her to take the case back, while the police have been doing nothing,” he alleged.
“While Kapurthala police registered the case after the intervention of the inspector general of police, now that it is time to arrest Parveen, they are again saying that they are helpless,” he alleged further.
Police refutes charges
Deputy superintendent of police Tejbir Singh refuted the charges of 'inaction'.
“The man is missing from his house, and we have declared him a proclaimed offender. The complainant is trying to force us to book his elder brother, but we cannot do it when there is no evidence of his involvement,” he said.
'I have nothing to do with this'
Parveen's brother Jai Dev claimed, “The complainant family expects some sort of financial compensation from me, but I am not living in the house where Parveen lived. I have a good reputation in society, which the complainant is trying to tarnish with false allegations of threatening.”
