The Panchkula municipal corporation (MC) is set to introduce a drone-based 3D mapping system for stormwater analysis in the city, whose topography makes it prone to flooding.
Officials said they will be able to have a topographical survey to plan for an effective stormwater system with the help of 3D mapping.
MC commissioner-cum-administrator Rajesh Jogpal said they will call tenders this week and work will be allotted to a private firm accordingly.
“Drones are accessible to even ‘non-experts’ as it is a simple system that will let one achieve survey-grade accuracy in a photogrammetric map or 3D model,” he added.
He said the 3D mapping through drone will help them in assessing reasons of waterlogging and locating the spots.
“A 3D model of the city with identification of encroached buildings, especially those obstructing the flow of water, will also be made. Also, identification and collection of ground control points using differential global positioning system (DGPS) is in the process,” he added.
Jogpal said it could be used to identify the slope and aspect of the area which can be further used for drainage mapping.
Panchkula civic body officials said it can also be used as a base for property tax collection as the accuracy of data was quite high.
“The data can also be used for change detection in terms of urban growth,” they added.
