Surjit Kaur (72), wife of Gurdev Singh, a resident of Bataur village in Dhuri sub-division of the district, was lodged in the Sangrur jail along with her husband and son after they were sentenced to six years in jail in dowry death case of her daughter-in-law.
Sangrur district jail deputy superintendent Hardeep Singh Bhatti confirmed that the elderly woman prisoner was found dead in her bed in the women's ward.
Surjit Kaur was diabetic and was also suffering with other age-related ailments, for which she had been referred to hospital many times, said the officer, adding that, "The other inmates of the women's ward said she woke up early in the morning and took bath before going to bed again, where she was found dead after some time."
He added that the jail authorities sent the body for post mortem and then handed it over to the family for cremation. Surjit's husband and son, who are also lodged in the same jail, were allowed to attend the funeral, he added.
