"The victim, Lovepreet Singh, a Class 2 student, was on his way home with his classmates after school when 23-year-old Harjinder Singh, a resident of Phidde Khurd, chased the boys. The others escaped, but he managed to catch hold of Lovepreet and threw him to the ground. He then slit the boy's throat with a sharp-edged weapon, killing him on the spot," said a source.

Darshan then fled from the spot, even as school teachers claimed to have given him the chase.
"Before people could realise what had happened, the accused was gone. A crowd gathered as the children shrieked. There was complete shock," the source added.

Sources also claimed that the accused Harjinder Singh was of an unsound mind, though the police did not confirm or deny the same.

"We have registered a case against Harjinder Singh under Section 302 (murder) at Sadar Kotkapura police station. The victim was murdered with a sharp-edged weapon and there was a deep wide cut on his throat. A number of police teams are at work to nab him. We have some clues about his possible hideouts," said Faridkot SSP Varinder Pal Singh.

Local loudspeakers are blaring announcements for any clue that could help nab the accused. The victim was an adopted son of Karnail Singh.
