Speaking to HT, the woman (name withheld) said she had gone to hospital at Dhilwan from where she was referred to the Kapurthala hospital due to her HIV positive status.

"Hospital staff showed some hesitation in admitting me initially after they came to know I was HIV positive. Later, I was admitted when the matter was brought to the notice of higher authorities. At around 8pm on Friday, I gave birth to a baby girl," she said adding that, "It is a blessing for us that the baby has been tested HIV negative."

Kapurthala SMO Dr Guriqbal Singh said, "We have called for the services of a counselor to deal with the HIV patient. The woman's status was not on official records. It is the negligence of Asha worker of the area who failed to register her as HIV positive. We have called for an explanation on this issue from her."

The hospital later tested the blood samples of her husband and two-and-a-half year old son. "The husband has also been found HIV positive while her son is HIV negative," said the SMO.
