Ludhiana: Man gets 10-yr jail for drug peddling

The court of additional sessions judge Harjit Singh awarded 10-year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh to a drug peddler on Friday.
The convict, Mohit Kumar of Sewak Nagar, Dholewal, would have to serve one more year in jail in case he fails to pay the fine.
The anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing had arrested Mohit Kumar on September 2, 2013 with 750 gm heroin at a checkpoint in Chander Nagar area. Mohit was passing through the checkpoint in a car when the cops signalled him to stop.
A case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against him at Division Number 4 police station in this context. The police had also seized his car.
The accused was lodged in Ludhiana Central Jail. Sub-inspector Harbans Singh, incharge of anti-narcotics and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing, said, another case of drug peddling was registered against him at Division Number 6 police station which is being heard in the court.
834 held in two years
The anti-narcotic and anti-illicit liquor smuggling wing has registered 621 cases and arrested 834 accused in the last two years.
The cops have recovered 64,273 bottles of illicit liquor, 95.590 gm opium, 19.21 quintal poppy husk, 3.750 gm charas, 10.510 kg heroine and smack, 1.61 crore sedatives pills, capsules and injections.
