Organised to mark the martyrdom of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh who were "bricked" alive during the rule of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, the three-day religious function would begin with an Akhand Path at Gurdwara Jyoti Swarup.

While earlier the fair was a religious affair, over the years it has assumed political overtones. Shiromani Akali Dal, Congress, SAD (Amritsar) and even Bahujan Samajwadi Party are expected to address their conferences here on December 26.

On the last day of the fair, a nagar kirtan would be taken out from Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib to Gurdwara Jyoti Swaroop here. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar said elaborate arrangements had been made for the function.

The students of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University (SGGSWU), too, are expected to participate in the three-day event.

Fatehgarh Sahib deputy commissioner Yashvir Mahajan, meanwhile, said there would be no festivities during the function. "Langars, too, will have only simple food and loud speakers would not be allowed as well," he said. "Wine shops will be closed, and anyone found selling intoxicants will be fined."
