The Khalsa College Governing Council (KCGC) is facing flak over its move to set up a varsity in Amritsar.
Q : What is the need to set up another varsity in Amritsar when the city already has the Guru Nanak Dev University?
Majithia: The GNDU is there, but it doesn’t restrict us from setting up another university. What’s the harm if we want to come up with a professional university that aims at providing job- oriented courses? We want to set up our university and affiliate our colleges to it. The Khalsa College will continue to be affiliated to the GNDU. We are not going to change that arrangement.
Q :Why don’t you set up a university in some backward area of Punjab?
Majithia: We don’t have any land. Who will give us the land for such a project? I don’t understand why everyone is opposing the move. We just want to promote education. The KCGC has excelled in the field of education and that’s why we have many professional colleges. The Khalsa University is the next step to provide best education facilities to students.
Q:Capt Amarinder Singh says the Majithia family doesn’t own the college so unilateral decisions must not be taken. What’s your take?
Majithia: Who is taking unilateral decisions? We have a proper council which is elected. Amarinder just says what others tell him. It’s better if he asks me. I don’t own the college and will not own the varsity too. It will be run by the KCGC and all decisions pertaining to it are taken by the governing council. I just feel that people are doing politics over the issue.
