The bridge connects Majha to the Malwa region. The protesters laid a siege to the bridge on October 14 demanding strict action against culprits of the sacrilege incidents, and policemen for firing on the protesters at Behbal Klan village near Kotakpura. They were also demanding removal of Punjab DGP Sumedh Saini.

The protesters had declared that they would end their stir only after Panj Pyaras would perform “ardas” after their reinstatement. Following the SGPC decision, one of the Panj Pyaras Bhai Malkeet Singh, along with Takht Sri Damdama Sahib former jathedar Giani Kewal Singh and Damdami Taksal leader Amrik Singh Ajnala reached the spot and performed the “ardas” to end the agitation.

Senior officials, including Tarn Taran deputy commissioner Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal and SSP Manmohan Sharma were trying to negotiate with the agitators the whole day on Sunday to lift the blockade.
