Punjab jails minister Sohan Singh Thandal on Wednesday okayed a blueprint to rehabilitate inmates addicted to drugs to make them “productive assets of society”.
“Punjab has been marching forward with a firm footing to eradicate drug menace from the state.
The supply of drugs into jails would be checked ruthlessly. Anyone found indulging in such nefarious activities would be brought to book,” he said, while giving finishing touches to the blueprint during a high-level review meeting with the jail authority of the state here on Wednesday.
Taking stock of the arrangements and security measures made for prevention of drugs, besides the rehabilitation of inmates, the minister asked the authorities to categorise the addicted inmates on the basis of their background so that requisite and adequate treatment, along with rehabilitation, could be extended.
The minister also directed the jail authorities to ensure the availability of all essential medicines.
