Punjab Cong MLA punctures own govt’s claim on drug menace, says drive worked only for 15 days

Even as chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh and his government in Punjab claim that their drive against drugs has been a huge success ever since the Congress came to power in March, party MLA Surjit Dhiman said on Monday that ‘chitta’ (‘white powder’, referring to drugs) is “easily available in every nook and corner” the as the drive against the menace “remained effective for only the first 15 days of the government”. Punjab police form SIT to probe complaint against AAP MLA Sandoa

The Punjab Police on Monday formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case against an AAP legislator who was booked for allegedly assaulting and outraging the modesty of a woman. The three-member SIT will be led by Rupnagar superintendent of police (SP)-Investigation Raminder Singh, said Rupnagar senior SP Raj Bachan Singh Sandhu. Read More

India’s flag of pride on Pakistan border becomes flag of embarrassment

Hoisted with much fanfare, India’s tallest Tricolour which was fluttering at a height of 360 ft near the India-Pakistan border at Attari has been out of sight for the past three months. The flag, which was repeatedly damaged due to high-velocity wind that flows at high altitude, was taken off by the Amritsar administration in April this year and has not been hoisted again ever since. Jalandhar: Man asks daughter to make nude video, held

A man has been arrested for allegedly asking his 16-year-old daughter to show him a nude video of hers, police said on Monday. According to Jalandhar commissionerate police, the man used to repeatedly tell his daughter to shoot a nude video. When she refused to do so, he allegedly threatened her. Read more

Sick of scolding over poor results, teen fakes own kidnapping, demands Rs 50,000 from father

Upset over father’s scoldings over poor result in studies in Class 11, 15-year-old budding cricketer Abra Mohammad of Guru Teg Bahadur Market of Khanna left home on Saturday and faked his own kidnapping to get even. He made a ransom call for Rs 50,000 from a borrowed phone to his father, Aslam Ali, from a train to Delhi. The call, made at 4am on Sunday, spooked the family and the police was informed. Read more

Chandigarh’s international connect strikes gold - for all the wrong reasons

The launch of flights abroad from the Chandigarh International Airport was much awaited and began with a lot of fanfare. But the airport is also making news for the wrong reasons with large seizures of gold being smuggled in here from the Gulf. In the 10 months since the first international flight took off from here on September 15 last year, customs officials at the airport have seized gold valued at over Rs 90 lakh ($140,000) from inbound passengers.
