The Rohtak police on Monday launched Mission Stray Cattle (MSC), an ambitious plan to rehabilitate roaming cows in Gaushalas or cow sheds, which began with the inspector general of police, Rohtak Range, Shrikant Jadhav, and superintendent of police, Shashank Anand, reaching a local gaushala and worshipping a bovine.
The officers then handed over the first lot of 40 cows to the gaushala.
“The cow is considered mother in our culture… but nowadays people are leaving cows on the road after they stop giving milk… that is wrong, we should give them respect as per our culture,” inspector general (IG) Jadhav said. “When I was in Hisar, I started the mission there also and we were surprised to see that the cows eating garbage and polythene bags,” Jadhav added. The inspector general, however, refused to answer if the recent ban on sale, possession and consumption of beef, would have a negative impact on beef business in the country.
“I cannot say anything on that,” he said. Many have expressed fears that the beef ban will lead to an increase in the number of stray cattle and over-crowded gaushalas.
Recently, Jadhav also appointed deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) as nodal officers for protection of stray cows in Rohtak, Sonepat, Jhajjar and Panipat districts. The IG also warned people, especially dairy farmers, of strict action if they abandoned their cows after they fail to give milk.

{{/usCountry}}Under MSC, people with “impeccable integrity” and a “clean image” will be made members of the committee. The members will be expected to spread awareness of the laws through advertisements, posters, banners, along with artists of the information and public relation department.
NGOs will also help in spreading the mission in schools and colleges. According to the police, person(s) found deserting the animals will be booked under Section 289, 133 and 21 of Haryana Municipal Committee Act, the Cattle Transport Act 1871 and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act 1960.
