SGPC urges Centre to rescue Punjabis stranded in Iraq

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar has appealed to the central government to make all-out efforts to secure the release of all Punjabis who have been trapped in Iraq following the internal strife in the Middle East nation.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar has appealed to the central government to make all-out efforts to secure the release of all Punjabis who have been trapped in Iraq following the internal strife in the Middle East nation.

Ina statement issued here on Friday, Makkar also made a passionate appeal to the government of Iraq and all peace-loving citizens of that country to ensure the safe return of the Punjabi youths, many of whom are believed to have been abducted by groups involved in the fighting in Iraq.

The SGPC chief pointed out that the Punjabis who had gone to Iraq with the sole purpose of earning their livelihood to support their families back home in India. Many of them have contributed to the development of Iraq and they have no role to play in the internal fighting that has broken out in the country, he added.

Makkar also complimented the Indian government's efforts for securing the release of all Indians trapped in Iraq.
