Sikh shrines in B'desh: Seechewal seeks PM's help for restoration

Noted environmentalist Balbir Singh Seechewal has sought Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh's intervention to restore Sikh shrines in Bangladesh. During his visit, Seechewal was honoured by the Bangladesh Gurdwara Management Board for his contribution to environmental conservation.

Back from the neighbouring country along with Sikh leaders after a five-day tour, he said, "In Dhaka, there were 35 historical Sikh shrines, but only five have escaped from encroachments. The others have been encroached upon by local people and are in a pitiable condition."

"These five shrines need a lot of attention. An attempt is being made to renovate the Sangat Tola shrine, but its original look should be restored by all means. The Prime Minister should take up the issue with the Bangladesh government," he added.

During his visit, Seechewal was honoured by the Bangladesh Gurdwara Management Board for his contribution to environmental conservation.

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, Patna Sahib jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh and Sant Daya Singh of Gurdwara Tahli Sahib were part of the group which visited shrines in Bangladesh.
