2 engg students among three killed in Kapurthala mishap

Two engineering students and a cousin of one of them, all in their 20s, were killed when a speeding truck hit two two-wheelers they were riding on near the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala on Monday morning. The truck also hit another motorcycle, leaving two people injured.

The deceased have been identified as Ramandeep Kaur (22) of Khrala Khurd village, Nimrat Kaur (22) of Husianpur village and Parminder Singh (23) of Chal Pipri village in Sultanpur Lodhi. Both girls were fourth-semester computer science students of Anand College of Engineering and Management. Injured were identified as Surjeet Singh (25) and Manjeet Singh (31) of Kapurthala.

The accident occurred around 9am when Parminder was riding a scooter alongside his cousin Ramandeep and her friend Nimrat, also on a scooter, on way to the college. Police said the truck driver reportedly tried to overtake a vehicle and hit the two-wheelers.

Cops from the Sultanpur Lodhi police station took the victims to local civil hospital, where doctors declared them brought dead.

Sultanpur Lodhi SHO Jangjit Singh said on basis of preliminary investigation and statements of family members, a case has been registered against the truck driver, Bharat Lal of Shekupura locality. The driver was arrested from the spot.
