Long traffic jams at railway crossings are very common in Punjab. In this farmers' dominated district, trains have to wait for their turn until the traffic gets cleared at the busy railway crossing on the Sangrur-Ubhawal link road.
Unending queues of truck and cars do not allow the guard of the railway crossing to close the gate for the passage of the trains as the traffic remains very hectic during the rush hours.
Passengers of the Hisar-Ludhiana passenger train had to wait for more than 15 minutes on Thursday as the guard failed to control the traffic by closing the gate.
Talking to Hindustan Times, superintendent of Sangrur railway station Sohan Lal Gill confirmed: "The Hisar-Ludhiana passenger train got delayed as the guard could not close the gate due to heavy traffic. After a wait of 15 minutes I had to approach the government railway police (GRP) guards who controlled the traffic for the passage of train"
"The delay of trains has become very common in Sangrur as traffic remains unmanageable at the Ubhawal crossing in morning and evening", he said adding that: "The traffic should be controlled by the Punjab traffic police. I have made repeated requests to the Sangrur police for the posting of two traffic police guards at this busy railway crossing to manage the traffic. But nobody is ready to listen to my demand. This negligence may lead to a big problem someday."
He said that he would write to the higher authorities for the solution of this problem.
Though the number of passengers remains very low at the Sangrur railway station but everyday more than 20 trains cross Sangrur. Due to one train, all trains of this route get delayed, said a railway crossing guard.
Traffic has increased manifold on the Ubhawal crossing as the Barnala crossing has been closed due to the construction of the railway overbridge(ROB). But the district administration has not made suitable arrangements for the smooth passage of the road and train traffic as the construction of the ROB may take for more than one year.
