Two cops dismissed for extortion in Ludhiana

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a head constable — deputed with crime investigation agency (CIA) — were suspended for promoting and being involved in criminal activities.

Ludhiana commissioner of police RN Dhoke on Friday terminated services of two police personnel —an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and a head constable — deputed with crime investigation agency (CIA) — for promoting and being involved in criminal activities.

Dhoke said ASI Swarn Singh and head constable Kamaljit Singh used to extort money from people involved in gambling, betting and prostitution. They themselves were involved in gambling and betting on matches.

He said, “Their continuous misconduct and indulgence in criminal activities reveal incorrigibility and complete unfitness for the police service. Their retention and continuation in service will be harmful to the interest of the state as well as the general public.”

He added that though the penalty of dismissal is very harsh and oppressive for a public servant, but no sympathy can outweigh the consideration of the public interest and regard for public good
