The city police on Monday claimed that if Ramneet Singh Uppal ‘Romy’, jailed for 10 years for attempt to murder at Burundi student Yannick Nihangaza that left him comatose for two years until his death recently, had fled country he must have used a fake passport.
The police said they usually seize passports of those arrested or convicted in any case.
The police said it was impossible for him to go outside on original passport and it is sure that if had fled outside the country, he used fake documents for procuring a passport.
It has come to notice that Gurdial Singh of Shala Nagar, Malsian, in Jalandhar district had deposited Rs 2 lakh for Romy’s parole with the district administration on March 5 this year. Sources said Singh is a relative of Romy and the reason cited for parole was that the convict wanted to live with family during this time.
But after Romy jumped the parole, the deposited money was forfeited by the administration and it wrote to the commissionerate police to arrest him immediately. On the first day of its formation of Special Investigation Team (SIT), deputy commissioner of police Naveen Singla tasked with heading it to look into this case went on leave for a week.
The police sources said a Punjabi singer who said to be close to Romy’s family had helped him fleeing the country. Police commissioner Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said, “Romy did not have any passport and if he had fled country, he might had used a fake one.”
He said, “Since DCP Naveen Singla is on leave, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) has already started investigation in the case., however, claimed that other members of SIT would investigate the case.
