An unidentified youth injured the occupant of a Toyota Fortuner with a knife and fled with the vehicle at the busy district shopping complex in Ranjit Avenue of the city late Monday.
The incident took place in the parking lot of the complex, which is one of the busiest spots in the city and houses a lot of offices.
Talking to HT, additional commissioner of police (ACP-north) Balkar Singh said, “The complainant, in his early twenties, said when he was going to sit in his Fortuner an unidentified youth came and snatched his car after injuring him with a knife. The youth also snatched his purse carrying a credit card and other documents.”
The youth sliced Armaan’s neck with the weapon and fled, he added. The incident took place at 8 pm on Monday, added the ACP.
Police commissioner visits the spot
Amritsar police commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh visited the spot and also talked to the youth from whom the Fortuner was snatched. Aulakh listened to the entire sequence of event from the complainant and later instructed police officials to take measures to arrest the carjacker.
“After registering a case we are getting the carjacker’s sketch made. I have pulled up the concerned police team in the area and instructed them to increase patrolling in the area,” police Commissioner Aulakh said.
“We are taking this incident seriously and efforts are being made to nab the carjacker,” he added. A case under section 382 of the IPC has been registered at the Civil Lines area police station.
Lack of patrolling
Even as the district shopping complex at Ranjit Avenue is a busy area, several incidents have taken place here and the adjoining areas in the past for lack of police patrolling.
Though there is a police beat box in the parking lot of the area not even a single policeman has been deployed there.
Recently, a woman had called up the police commissioner after seeing some youngsters drinking in the open.
Police parties patrolled the area for a few days after that but things returned to the usual thereafter.
Cases of snatching are on the rise and it has been a cause of concern to the residents and tourists as well.
