Mohanlal and Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar is underway.
Mohanlal and Mammootty’s Kunjali Marakkar is underway.

Mohanlal’s crew and Mammootty’s crew had both announced that they would be making a film on Kunjali Marakkar - one of the most popular naval chiefs of the Zamorin, who fought the Portuguese in the late 16th and early 17th century. Mohanlal’s film will be directed by Priyadarshan, while Santosh Sivan is directing Mammootty’s film.

After the initial announcements in November, Priyadarshan had spoken to media and said that this would be a big film and research for the same was already underway.

On February 15, playback singer and composer MG Sreekumar took to Facebook and posted, “Our new film ‘KUNJALI MARAKKAR’ starts shortly. Please bless us. Love u all.” He also posted a picture of Lalettan with Priyadarshan. This film would mark the actor director’s collaboration after the successful 2016 film Oppam.

On the same day, Shaji Nadeshan, one of the directors of August Cinema took to Facebook to post that their Kunjali Marakkar was also underway. He also added that the shoot will begin from July 2018. He wrote, “Kunjali marrakkar pre production works in full swing! Shoot starts july 2018.”

It is surprising that the two superstars are going ahead with their projects. Director Priyadarshan in an interaction with TOI had said that he will give Mammotty’s team 8 months to begin their project before he takes up the film with Mohanlal. He had then cited the example of Bollywood films about Bhagat Singh that released in 2002 and said, “Both movies didn’t work in the box office. All that resulted was bad blood between the teams. We don’t want that in the Malayalam film industry.”

This makes us wonder if the dynamics between the team of both the films have already changed.
