The defending three-time world champion, who leads Rosberg by nine points in the title race, was second behind him in Friday’s opening session. Hamilton clocked a best lap in one minute and 22.801 seconds to outpace Rosberg by 0.193 seconds.
Hamilton is seeking to complete a hat-trick of successive Italian wins and to claim his 50th Formula One victory on Sunday.
Four-time former champion Sebastian Vettel was third fastest ahead of his Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.
VERSTAPPEN HANDED ‘GENTLE WARNING’
Formula One’s governing body has given Max Verstappen a “gentle warning” about his driving in the Belgian GP. “(FIA race director) Charlie (Whiting) was keen to show him a replay of Spa,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. “It was a gentle warning to say ‘that’’ll be a black and white flag’...a bit of a warning.”
A black and white flag can be waved at a driver during a race to warn him that he has been reported for unsporting behaviour. If the driver does it again, a black flag will be shown which tells him he has been excluded and must return immediately to the pits.
