Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz Highlights, Paris Olympics 2024 final: Novak Djokovic completed tennis on Sunday after he beat Carlos Alcaraz 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) in an enthralling men’s tennis singles final to win his first-ever gold medal at the Olympics. His illustrious career featured a men's record 24 Grand Slam titles and the most weeks spent at No. 1 in the rankings by any man or woman. It also contained an Olympic bronze medal from 2008, but he made clear that it was simply not sufficient for him. Until he beat Lorenzo Musetti of Italy in the semifinal on Friday, Djokovic was 0-3 in that round at the Games. On Sunday, he put on one of the finest performances of his career to deny Alcaraz the elusive title and become only the fifth player to complete a career golden slam—winning all four singles Grand Slams and the Olympic title.
The opening set alone lasted an hour and 33 minutes, as neither player took a backward step in a ferocious contest. There were plenty of break points on display, but none of them managed to get a break of serve as the set headed to the tie-break, where Alcaraz cracked. When another tie-break was required to decide the second set, again, Djokovic found another gear, sealing victory with a stunning forehand winner down the line.
Following the win, Djokovic let out a roar, before shaking hands with Alcaraz and then fell on the court in tears. That was how much that Olympic gold meant for him. He became fifth-time lucky in what was his final appearance at the Games. He then climbed up the stairs to be swamped by his family and team.
The 21-year-old Alcaraz, who was denied the Olympic title to go with this year's French Open and Wimbledon crowns, was in tears at the end.
