Sanchez stuns Jankovic to win in Rome

Unseeded Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez produced a major surprise by beating World No. 7 Jelena Jankovic 7-6 7-5 in the Italian Open final on Saturday.

Unseeded Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez produced a major surprise by beating World No. 7 Jelena Jankovic 7-6 7-5 in the Italian Open final on Saturday.

The Serb pulled back from 4-1 down in the first set and had a set point on serve at 6-5 before losing the tiebreak. Jankovic then twice recovered from breaks in the second set but Martinez Sanchez clinched the biggest title of her career after breaking for the third time.

Henin, Sharapova shocked in Madrid
Madrid: Justine Henin's suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of France's Aravane Rezai in the Madrid Open first round on Sunday. She went down 4-6 7-5 6-0. Maria Sharapova was another former world number one to fall at the first hurdle, the Russian 11th seed going down 6-4 6-3 to Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

Munich: Second-seed Mikhail Youzhny won the final of Munich's ATP tournament on Sunday, beating favourite Marin Cilic. World number 15 Youzhny saw off Cilic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 to win his first ATP tournament of the year.
