Santosh Bharti refused to marry the girl when he discovered during the vermilion putting ritual on the bride's forehead that his future wife was not of fair complexion as told by her parents.

This incident took place in Shahpur village in Siwan district Saturday. Soon after Bharti's refusal to marry, the bride's family immediately made the groom hostage, but had to release him later after the local police intervened.

Nevertheless, the marriage was not solemnised and the groom returned to his village in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
