Tennis legends Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe are all set to reignite their famous rivalry as they were named captains for the inaugural edition of Laver Cup beginning on September 22.
McEnroe will lead Team World with younger brother, Patrick, acting as the vice-captain while Borg will be in charge of Team Europe with Swedish legend Thomas Enqvist as his deputy.
In an interview with Tennis world USA, Patrick McEnroe said, “I am deeply honored to stand by John’s side for the first edition of the Laver Cup. This is an exciting time for tennis and I will be there doing whatever I can to ensure Team World has the best chance of winning.”
It will also be a dream come true for Thomas Enqvist as he will be working with childhood hero Bjorn Borg and he sounded quite confident ahead of the competition.
“He (Bjorn Borg) is the reason why I wanted to play tennis. My whole life he’s been my biggest idol. It will be a huge honor to work with Bjorn and this incredible team of champions in this first edition of the Laver Cup,” Enqvist said.
Laver Cup, a three-day tournament to be held at the O2 Arena in Prague, will see the biggest tennis stars from Europe take on a strong Rest of the World team.
The tourney will take place every year, two weeks following the US Open and the organisers have announced that the next edition will be held in USA.
Team Europe consists of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Marin Cilic, Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev and Tomas Berdych. On the other hand, Team World will also boast of big names like Jack Sock, Nick Kyrgios, John Isner, Sam Querrey, Juan Martin Del Potro and Denis Shapovalov.
