In 2017, the Supreme Court overruled a 2010 Gujarat high court verdict that found in favour of a customary law which prevented Mumbai-based plaintiff Goolrukh Gupta from visiting the Tower of Silence — a sacred space for death rituals — to perform her father’s last rites, as she had married a non-Zoroastrian.

Supreme Court’s 2018 verdict diluting Dalit atrocity law to be reviewed by 3-judge bench

The top court had last year banned automatic arrests and registration of cases under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, triggering protests in parts of the country.

SC to decide on bench for EWS reservation pleas

The bench is hearing petitions challenging the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Fourth Amendment) Act, 2019, filed on the grounds that economic criterion cannot be the sole basis for reservation.

Supreme Court bench not happy with order of another bench

Article 28(1) of the Indian Constitution says, “No religion instruction shall be provided in any education institution wholly maintained out of State funds.” A bench led by Justice RF Nariman, while hearing the petition said the matter should be placed before the Chief Justice of India for reference to an appropriate bench.

North Delhi civic body schools have no benches for students

Officials of the North Delhi municipal corporation school in Jahangirpuri said they have only 200 benches for around 1,100 students. The school operates in two shifts — girls in the morning and boys in the evening.

Supreme Court likely to set up bench as Ayodhya case resumes on Monday

On September 27, the Supreme court had declined to refer to a five-judge constitution bench the issue of reconsideration of the observations in its 1994 judgment that a mosque was not integral to Islam which had arisen during the hearing of the Ayodhya land dispute.
