Decoding the 1st innings of India’s Disaster Management Act

On Tuesday, Union home Secretary Ajay Bhalla wrote to the chief secretaries of all states and Union territories to discontinue the orders and guidelines issued under the Disaster Management Act (DMA).
DMA was invoked in 2020 for the first time since the legislation came into force in 2005 following the 2004 Tsunami, which hit India’s south eastern coast and killed around 10,000 people.

Weather disasters cost $170 billion in damages this year, $20 bn more than last

The most expensive disaster in 2021 was hurricane Ida, which lashed the eastern United States and caused around $65 billion in damages. After crashing into Louisiana at the end of August, it made its way northward and caused extensive flooding in New York City and the surrounding area.

Supreme Court to hear pleas pertaining to Mullaperiyar dam’s safety today

The Kerala government had earlier moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to Tamil Nadu to not release a huge quantity of water in the wee hours from the spillway shutters of the century-old dam, saying it causes heavy damage to people living downstream.

Heavy rain floods Karnataka; red alert in 7 districts, ICG swings into action
