Top court takes exception to selective disclosures by media in criminal trials

The apex court was hearing a case related to the suicide of a doctor in Agra on August 6, following which her father registered a dowry harassment case against her husband and in-laws on August 7. Within a couple of days of the death, the alleged suicide note was published in local newspapers.

Aged in-laws can’t evict married woman: Supreme Court

The court held that whenever such a dispute arises before the senior citizens tribunal, it cannot simply order for eviction of the daughter-in-law, but what is required on its part is to “appropriately mould reliefs, after noticing the competing claims of the parties”.

SC grants bail to Arnab amidconcerns over prompt hearing

The court ordered the release of Goswami and two others in an abetment to suicide case dating back to May 2018, allowing the accused to be released from jail, on execution of personal bond of Rs 50,000.

‘There is Supreme Court to protect liberty of citizens’: What top court said while hearing Arnab’s bail plea

The petition is being heard by a vacation bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee. During the hearing, the top court also asked the state whether there was any need for custodial interrogation.

Supreme Court stays order on Navlakha

The high court had directed the investigating officer to produce the entire set of records filed before NIA courts in Mumbai and Delhi for obtaining a production warrant and for extension of Navlakha’s judicial remand and fixed the matter for hearing next on June 3.

NIA moved the apex court against the order. A bench of Justices Arun Mishra, S Abdul Nazeer, and Indira Banerjee directed the stay and sought response of Navlakha on NIA’s plea by June 15 when the case will be heard next.
