Result of polls will answer crucial questions

The Karnataka Legislative Assembly election will test whether the state is more communalised and whether PM Modi?s popularity can save the BJP, which is facing anti-incumbency. The BJP has been trying to build a communally polarised electorate, but this strategy has limitations in Karnataka?s political context. The party has also tried to placate various caste groups through changing the state?s reservation policy and has adopted an aggressive communal strategy that has yielded mixed results beyond coastal districts. The PM?s popularity did not help the BJP in the 2018 election, and the opposition is highlighting the state?s unfair treatment by the Centre.
